About this Tea

Lemongrass growing in the Nilgiris is a by-product of elevation: the cool, moist nights concentrate the citral content in the stalks far above what tropical plains lemongrass achieves. We source from a small grower on the plateau near Gudalur, where the lemongrass is shade-dried at altitude to preserve volatile aromatic oils before blending. Combined with our estate green tea, the result is a cup that smells of pure Nilgiris hillside.

The citronellal and citral compounds in lemongrass have a well-documented calming effect on the central nervous system — a property that pairs well with the L-theanine naturally present in our high-altitude green tea. The combination produces an alert-but-relaxed state that makes this our recommended afternoon cup, particularly for those who find pure green tea too subtle or too grassy on its own.

Brewed correctly at 75–80°C, the cup is pale gold with a luminous clarity and an aroma that announces itself from across the room. It works equally well as a hot tea or steeped for four minutes and poured over ice, where the lemongrass character intensifies and the natural sweetness of the green tea comes forward. A thin slice of fresh lemon added to the hot cup is the one addition we endorse.

My afternoon ritual and my best iced tea discovery this year

I started buying this for hot afternoon tea and then experimented with it iced. Steeped four minutes and strained over ice — it is exceptional. The lemongrass comes forward in the cold version in a way it doesn't when hot, and the natural sweetness of the green tea means I don't need to add sugar. Have converted four colleagues at work to this format.
