Our Heritage

Thirty Years on the
Northern Nilgiris

In 1994, T. Rajan chose Kaircombai — a plot of abandoned tea on the northern face of the Nilgiris plateau, at 1,800 metres — not for convenience, but for character. Two years of tasting across the district told him what the altitude and the reserve-forest microclimate did to a leaf. He was right.

"The estate is the size it is because the good land at Kaircombai is finite. Beyond 20 acres, we would become a different tea."

Three generations later, 14 acres of estate produce the leaf that Tata Consumer and Brooke Bond source specifically for Nilgiris brightness in their premium blends — the same leaf, now sold directly to you, at estate price.

Tea Guide

Brew it Right

Good tea is ruined more often by hot water and careless timing than by leaf quality. Five styles, five personalities — each with its own temperature, ratio, and technique.

From the Estate

Life at Kaircombai

The estate in every season — pluck, process, pack, and the people who make it possible.

Origin

From the Nilgiris

Kaircombai sits on the northern plateau of the Nilgiris — cooler, mistier, and more consistently high-altitude than most estates in the district. That geography is why the cup tastes the way it does.

At 1,800 metres on the northern slope, Kaircombai experiences longer cold nights and heavier mist than estates at the same altitude on the southern face. The result: slower leaf growth, higher catechin concentration, and the distinctive briskness that commercial buyers source us specifically for.

Science of the cup

Why high-altitude tea is better

At 1,800m, slower growth concentrates the compounds that make tea genuinely good for you. The published science explains why.

High-Altitude Catechin Boost

Teas grown above 1,500m carry 20–30% more catechins than valley-grown equivalents of the same cultivar. At 1,800m, our leaf accumulates EGCG as a UV-protection mechanism during slower growth cycles.

Journal of Food Science, 2018 altitude-catechin review

L-Theanine + Caffeine Synergy

L-theanine, naturally concentrated in high-altitude tea, modulates alpha brain waves and blunts caffeine's stimulant peak — producing calm alertness rather than jitteriness. This synergy is unique to tea and not replicated by coffee.

Nutritional Neuroscience, 2008; Asia Pacific Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2012

Cardiovascular Polyphenols

Regular tea consumption (3–5 cups/day) is associated with a modest but statistically significant reduction in LDL cholesterol. Theaflavins in black tea inhibit LDL oxidation in vitro, relevant to atherosclerosis risk.

American Journal of Clinical Nutrition meta-analysis, 2019

Antioxidant Theaflavins in Black Tea

During orthodox and CTC processing, catechins oxidise into theaflavins and thearubigins. These compounds retain significant antioxidant activity and contribute to the brisk, bright colour that characterises quality Nilgiris teas.

European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2016

Gut Microbiome Support

Polyphenols in black and green tea act as prebiotics — selectively feeding beneficial bacteria including Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species. This effect is observed at normal consumption levels of 2–4 cups per day.

Nutrients journal, 2019 systematic review of tea polyphenols and gut microbiota

Hydration Counter-Evidence

The diuretic effect of tea has been consistently overstated. At normal caffeine levels (40–70mg per cup), tea hydrates as effectively as water. Studies using matched caffeine doses show no net fluid loss from regular tea consumption.

European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2011 Maughan et al.

Estate Impact

A small estate. Clear principles.

A 14-acre Nilgiri estate cannot feed the world — but it can demonstrate what responsible production looks like at a scale where every decision matters. Forest Brews Tea Company has run on three principles since 1994: pay the people fairly, protect the land they work, and never let a middleman obscure where the tea came from. These are not marketing pledges. They are operating rules.

👐

0

Fair-wage pickers

All permanent, all paid above Tamil Nadu state minimum wage, with housing assistance and school support.

🌿

0 acres

Under shade-grown cover

Silver oak and grevillea canopy across the full estate — maintains soil moisture and provides habitat for migratory birds.

🌳

0+

Shade trees planted (2021–24)

Planted under Meena's replanting programme to restore canopy thinned during the original estate conversion.

💧

~70%

Rainwater-fed

The Nilgiris southwest monsoon and northeast retreating monsoon together supply most of the estate's irrigation needs — groundwater extraction is minimal.

🎒

0 kits

School kits distributed annually

Every picker's school-age child receives stationery, a uniform allowance, and books at the start of each academic year.

🏥

Quarterly

Healthcare camps on-estate

A mobile clinic from Ooty Government Hospital visits the estate every quarter for check-ups and preventive care for workers and their families.

⚖️

Fair wages, always

Every picker at Kaircombai is a permanent employee, not a seasonal contractor. Wages track above the Tamil Nadu state minimum and are reviewed annually. Housing, school, and healthcare support come as standard — not as charity, but as part of what it means to work here.

🌿

Shade-grown, biodiversity-first

We do not clear native canopy to maximise planting rows. The shade trees that shelter our bushes also retain moisture, fix nitrogen, slow erosion, and support the Nilgiri biosphere's endemic bird species. Productivity per acre is lower than an open-sun estate; cup quality is measurably higher.

🔗

Zero-broker traceability

Forest Brews does not sell through the Cochin or Coonoor auction for any of its named grades. Every kilogram of branded Forest Brews tea goes directly from estate to importer or customer, with a batch record traceable to the week of harvest. You know exactly whose hands made your cup.

Know the difference

Estate-direct vs supermarket tea

What you get when the estate is the brand — and what you give up when it isn’t.

Feature
Forest Brews
Supermarket Tea
Source
Single estate — Kaircombai, 1,800m, own land
Multi-origin blend — typically 5–15 estates pooled by a broker
Traceability
Estate name, pluck date, grade on every pack
Blend code only — no estate-level traceability for consumers
Farm-to-pack time
6 hours pluck-to-dryer, packed within 4 weeks
Typically 3–12 months from pluck to retail shelf via auction and blending
Price paid to grower
Direct pricing — no middleman, broker, or auction margin
Auction-based — estate gets a fraction of the shelf price
Altitude
1,800m — measurably higher catechin and L-theanine content
Unspecified — often valley or mid-altitude for volume and consistency
Leaf quality check
Hand-assessed by estate manager, batch rejected if below grade
Lab-tested against minimum spec — no sensory rejection at this stage
Additives / flavouring
None — tea only (or tea + whole spices in masala blend)
Branded masala teas routinely use sprayed "chai flavour" concentrate

What our customers say

Trusted by tea drinkers across the world

This is the first time since I left Ooty that a cup of tea has made me stop what I'm doing and just sit with it. That's not hyperbole — that's the Nilgiris.
